Debt-Free Friday

Today’s Debt-Free Friday post is closely related to its preceding post. If you missed it, it’s called “Now.”
If you’ve been working your debt snowball, or even if you’ve already become debt-free, it’s easier than you think to lose faith. It happens to many people on all sorts of journeys in their lives. The key, though, is that although it’s easy to lose faith in yourself, it’s totally possible not to.
When you have a bad week or a bad month with your finances, you might start to compare your current financial practices with previous times, when you were crazy gazelle intense. You might start to feel inadequate, compared to the former you. You also might start to formulate theories about what the future holds for you, based on your current situation.
Don’t do this. The past is past, and the future is the future. Stop worrying about the way it was or the way it’s going to be. The only thing that matters is what you’re doing right now. You are the only person with the power to change your situation, so do it!
If you don’t like that you spent money on fast food 4 times this week, stop spending money on fast food. Just stop! It’s really as easy as that. If you think you spent too much “fun money” this week or this month, don’t do it again. And don’t beat yourself up for it either. Everything that happens in our lives is for our benefit. We learn from every decision we make. Maybe going out to eat one too many times this month will be the flipping of the switch for you – the moment when you say, “No, not anymore, I’m done with that.”
We often fear that change is something which must be planned, thought out, and executed slowly and safely. That’s bogus. Change is a decision. It has nothing to do with your past or future, and everything to do with right now. So don’t worry about the way you did things, or the way you will do things – only focus on what you’re doing right now. We have to much life to live to worry about the things we can’t control, so let’s start focusing on the things we can control.
Don’t fight for the past or the future, fight for right now.
